Canva's Free Plan on a Phone: Make Covers, Checklists and Social Posts

Good design doesn't have to be fancy. It has to be clear. Canva's free plan is plenty for covers, checklists and posts — here's how to use it well on a phone.

Start with the right size

Tap Create and search for:

  • "US Letter document" for printable guides and checklists.
  • "Instagram post" (square) for social posts.
  • "YouTube thumbnail" or "Facebook post" for landscape images.

Starting with the correct size saves headaches later.

Free vs. Pro

Elements marked with a crown or Pro label require a paid plan. Stick to free ones. When searching templates or photos, look for filters for free content.

A simple design system

Pick:

  • Two colors — one dark (for text) and one accent (for headings or highlights).
  • One or two fonts — a bold font for titles and a readable one for body text.
  • Plenty of white space.

Use the same choices on every product and post. People start recognizing your work.

Product cover in 10 minutes

  1. Search templates for "ebook cover" or "workbook cover."
  2. Replace the title with yours — big and readable even as a small thumbnail.
  3. Add a subtitle saying who it's for.
  4. Add your name at the bottom.
  5. Download as PNG for your store listing.

Printable checklist in 15 minutes

  1. Search templates for "checklist."
  2. Paste your items, one per line, with checkboxes.
  3. Keep text at least 11–12 pt so it's readable when printed.
  4. Download as PDF Print.

Social post that teaches something

The posts that get saved and shared usually teach one thing:

  • "3 free apps I use every day to stay organized"
  • "What to bring to the DMV when replacing your ID"

Big headline, three short points, your name or handle at the bottom.

Copyright basics

  • Use Canva's free library, your own photos, or images you have rights to.
  • Don't use logos, characters or brand names you don't own.
  • Don't sell Canva templates as-is; your product should be your own content.
  • Read Canva's current content license if you're unsure.

Keep originals editable

Name designs clearly ("Budget Dinners — Cover v1.1") so you can update them in seconds when you improve your product.

Common questions

How do I know if a Canva element is free?

Premium elements usually show a crown icon or a Pro label. Filter for free items or avoid anything marked as Pro if you're on the free plan.

Can I sell products I designed in Canva?

Generally you can sell products you designed, but read Canva's current license terms. Don't resell templates as-is or use elements as the main thing being sold without changes.

What size should a product cover be?

A common choice is a portrait document size like US Letter for PDFs, plus a square or 1200 by 628 image for listings and social posts.
